spyparty.com to Steam Account Linking Enabled

Okay, I’ve got spyparty.com to Steam account linking working, so if you bought SpyParty on spyparty.com or plan to buy it here1 you can now get it in your Steam library! Sorry this wasn’t ready for launch, but the truth is you won’t notice much of a difference at all, since everybody is in the same lobby and it’ll hopefully pick up all your settings and your login info and replays and stuff.

Oh, I should probably mention here on the blog that we shipped on Steam and you can now buy the game there, since I just realized I have been so snowed under with support that I haven’t actually posted about this. More on that later when I’ve actually processed this momentous occasion.

Anyway, Steam account linking…here’s how you do it:

Log into your SpyParty beta homepage and look in the top left corner for this fancy new internet website link:

Ignore my awful stats please, I tend to play people who are way better than me! Which is a lot of the community now, but anyway…

Click that link, and follow the instructions on the forms. You’ll need to make sure your email is up-to-date because I’ll need to send you a confirmation code, and then you’ll be sent to log into your Steam account, and poof! SpyParty will show up in your Steam library. There are no codes involved, just pure magic.

If you have alts, you’ll only be able to link one of them to your Steam account, but don’t worry, you’ll be able to log into all of your alts from your Steam version.

In fact, the Steam version will just use your existing spyparty.com account credentials, so you should be able to install it with Steam and run it and not see any difference at all.

Are there differences? Very few…

Advantages of running the Steam version:

  • everybody loves having their games in one place, so now it’s in your Steam library
  • the updates will download less data for most updates right now,2 so if you’re on a very slow internet connection or using metered data when you update, Steam might be better
  • you’ll accumulate Steam stats for playtime and stuff, but you’ll also accumulate the more accurate and granular SpyParty stats like usual too
  • you’ll show up in Steam’s list of who’s playing SpyParty
  • Steam overlay, which is nice but also a mixed bag because the default shift-tab overrides its usage in the game for replay camera cycling and UI tabbing

Advantages of running the spyparty.com version:

  • you’ll get updates faster, when they hit, because Steam won’t let apps start downloads in the background, whereas I do, so when an update hits the server, you’ll get it immediately while for Steam you’ll have to exit SpyParty and wait for Steam to figure out there’s an update, and during that time you won’t be able to log into the lobby
  • you can install the spyparty.com version anywhere you want, it’s just a directory of files

But really, you can just install them both and they’ll interoperate. Oh, and once you link the accounts you’ll be able to post in the Steam SpyParty Discussions groups, regardless of which version you actually run. Plus you’ll be able to write a review and all that good stuff.

Report any bugs you find in the beta forums, and happy downloading!

Oh, and yes, I will try to get Steam to spyparty.com account linking soon so Steam players can participate in the private beta forums. But first I will fix the problem with Steam persona names not being used in the library, that’s my next priority!

Eventually friends list support, and who knows what else, but for now I’m just trying to get the big things fixed and then get back to matchmaking. I have a lot of support mail and posts to go through still, sorry for the delay on that!

  1. I do get a bit more money if you buy it here, but don’t worry if you’d rather buy it on Steam that’s totally fine too! []
  2. Technical explanation: I don’t support delta encoding for updates yet, but Steam does. []

First of all, Thank you for making this game, it’s always been a fun one to play.
I’ve played this through mac and wineskin and all that for a while now, and now that it’s on steam, I was wondering how long its going to be until you work out the ‘technical setbacks’ of the Mac version through steam?

    • checker says:

Thanks for the kind words! I need to fix some of the other higher priority problems first, but hopefully not too long. The non-steam version shares the lobby with the steam version, and you can use the link to get access to the steam forums and write reviews and stuff, so you’re not missing anything except the convenient library management of steam right now. But, it’s definitely on the list!

I bought the game through your website and registered my steam ID but it’s still not showing up in my Steam library. Is there anything else I need to do or does it just take some time?

    • checker says:

Yeah, I’ve got a bug if you have family sharing on, but I think I’ve got it figured out. Send your Steam ID (the 76….) number to support at spyparty dot com.

  5. Emiel says:

Could you give me a key instead? Why can’t you send keys in the first place?

    • checker says:

Because sending out steam keys is a giant mess for a whole bunch of reasons. This directly adds it into your library and is a much cleaner solution. I expect most developers to switch to this method in the future, everybody I’ve told about it had been pretty excited to see how it works for SpyParty, and so far it’s been great.

    • Emiel says:

That makes sense. Thanks for the reply! :D

  6. John says:

Apologies for emailing you about the code :).

    This was seamless. Nice one!

I believe I got this the first day you put it up for sale and I don’t think I’ve played since those first few months! Can’t believe you’ve managed to keep it going! Well done :)

hi I can’t seem to login when I press play. it says login so I put my username and password but it doesn’t work.
is there any way I can switch my password.

  8. Leon says:

    How secure is this?

    • checker says:

Hmm, I’m not sure what you mean? It uses oauth to log into Steam, and so spyparty.com never gets your Steam credentials, if that’s what you mean.

    • Leon says:

Yes that is what I meant. That’s good to hear, thanks.

  9. Egz says:

Is there a way to unlock any more than what’s available? I’ve seen info and screen shots of the other missions but never get to do more than the few available in game.

    • checker says:

Hi, sorry, the UI is kind of confusing right now, it’s fixed in the next build! If you move your mouse to the top of the screen on the Spy setup screen (where you pick the missions and characters and stuff), the level icons will slide out from the top. The arrow on the right side of that UI element is a listbox and you can switch it to Intermediate mode and Experienced to get to the rest of the levels and missions! There’s no tutorial for these things yet, but check out this guide for moving to Intermediate:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1346221887 This part of the game will get better soon!

    How do I login

    • checker says:

I’ll paste the response I gave to another person on another page: Hi, if you bought the game here then you created an account when you bought it, and if you bought the game on steam then it automatically creates the account. Apparently some people have been scammed by people selling them just the installer, which is not going to let you play online because you need the account.

  11. param says:

hi i got the game spy party but i did not make a account i just finished the tutorial and i want to play online but i cant since i did not make a account is there a way to make an account for me pls

  12. ljzhanglc says:

I bought the game on steam, then I realized I couldn’t run it on my mac. What should I do? I came here following the link on steam but in order to play it here, I need to pay for it here, again. So please let me know if there is a way of playing this game without purchasing it twice.

  13. Whale says:

So just so I have this super clear, I can buy the game on steam and get it on spyparty.com, right?

    • checker says:

You can buy it on steam or spyparty.com (well, the latter is disabled until I fix a server thing, but hopefully in a few days). Right now, if you buy it on spyparty.com you’ll be able to activate it in your steam library, but as of right now you can’t buy it on steam and get spyparty.com forums access yet, but I’ll be fixing that soon too. But yes, soon you’ll be able to buy it either place and get an account on both.

  14. JesusAugusto says:

How i sign up and where?

    • checker says:

Hi, the game is for sale on Steam or here on spyparty.com (well, not here right this minute because I’m drowning in a server upgrade, but soon). Those are the only two places it’s available, and when you buy it you will get an account automatically. There have been reports of other sites giving the installer away for free, or even selling it, which is a scam, sorry!

  15. tung says:

hi, i don’t register on spy party. do you help me?

    • checker says:

Hi, not sure what you mean. Send mail to support at spyparty dot com if you’re having troubles with your account. You have to buy the game to have an account, just to be clear, but if you’ve already bought it here or on Steam (the only two places it’s available for sale officially) and are still having trouble, send mail to support!

  16. Antonia says:

How can I find my Account and my password . HELP ME PLEASE

    • checker says:

Hi, if you bought the game on Steam it should automatically log in, and if you bought it here on spyparty.com you would have gotten a username and password when you signed up. Those are the only two places it’s available officially.

  18. steve says:

Hello, I have never used steam before and am not familiar with how the entire online gaming thing works. If I purchase this game (whether on steam or not), would I be able to play my brother online who lives on the other side of the country?
Or would we each have to purchase the game?
Thank you so much for any information.

    • checker says:

Hi, yeah, you can buy it here or on Steam, and play anybody else with the game all over the world. Currently you do need two copies to play somebody else. I hope to make a feature that lets you loan a copy to a friend but it’ll be a while.

  19. Lisa says:

Hi. I bought the game on steam and I have a MAC. Is there a way to combine my steam with spyparty.com? Steam won’t let me open the game… pleeeeeaaase help

    • checker says:

Hi, since I replied to your email to support, I’ll reply here for others…I don’t have the steam -> spyparty.com account linking working yet, and the macos build isn’t on steam right now due to some difficulty with the way steam wants mac builds to work. And then there’s the macos catalina issue, which is that SpyParty is still a 32 bit executable, and as of catalina, macos only supports 64 bit programs. So there’s some work to do before things will be back to normal on the macos spyparty front, unfortunately. Best bet right now is to run a vm or dual boot, sadly, I know both of those are a pain.

  20. TrekyCzX says:

HI, i dont have my login and password informations. What I have to do?

    • checker says:

Hi, did you buy it here on spyparty.com or on Steam? If you bought it here, you’ll use the same username and password you signed up with, and if you bought it on Steam it shouldn’t prompt you (although there’s a bug with that sometimes). Send mail to support at spyparty dot com if you bought it here or on Steam but still can’t log in.
