Sorry I’m Swamped, Here’s a Teaser Post!

I’m sorry I went dark all of a sudden after PAX, I just got completely swamped with stuff, including festival deadlines, lectures, GDC stuff, etc.

It’s going to be a couple more weeks of crunching for various things (like the IGF deadline on 10/18), and then I will post the rest of the cool stuff from PAX I’m sitting on, and more.

In the meantime, I posted on Facebook about the various upcoming playtests, so check that out, and become a SpyParty “fan” there while you’re at it.  I tend to post small stuff there and on Twitter when I don’t have time to make a real post here on the blog.  I prefer the real long-form blog posts to the smaller notes, but when I’m snowed under sometimes I can only manage 140 characters!

Here’s a teaser video from one of the PAX Experts Tournament games, I think this one was in the quarterfinals:

Oh, and one of the things I’m doing for these festivals is getting SpyParty working over the internet, so that will pave the way for more testing where you don’t have to be in my dining room.  More on that in a month or two.

    Beta?

    • checker says:

Gotta have alpha first, and pre-alpha before that.  It’s a long way out.  Beta means almost done, usually.  :)

Why not do a world tour, pass by the netherlands while you’r at it >_>
I’m dying to try playing as sniper in this game ^^

I’ll be in Nottingham, UK the week of the 26th, you can come there to play!  That’s more than half way!

I’d love to do a test! But I think New Zealand is a bit far for that. :P

    Good luck!

That’s why I’m getting it working over the internet!  It’ll be a good latency test.  :)

      :D :D :D

(I live in Nottingham, <15 minutes from market square)

Then you will get to play!  It’ll be set up at the GameCity event on Thursday, the 28th, I think, in one of their “Lounges”.  I think I’m doing a talk at 11am, and then it’ll be set up to play all day, or something like that.  More news as I get it.

I’ll happily do some latency testing while playing from Canada :P

:D, everything in this posts makes me happy ^^, except, the closer the signals of actually playing this game once come, the harder it seems to wait..^^

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gKacA2ZZ2k long video with explanation. Bit gritty, but anything goes in my case.

SpyParty is so intense just to watch! The tension building up to the actual kill (or success of the spy) is so high.

If you do set things up over the Internet, I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of people who’d sign up to try it immediately, starting with me!

  8. Squishy says:

Thanks for the update and the video. I had to watch the last few seconds a few times to even catch what happened. I guess by the quarter finals people were already getting good with the game.

    • checker says:

Yeah, these guys were getting pretty good.  What you see in the video is the Sniper going around lowlighting all the people he knows can’t be the Spy, like the Suspected Double Agents, the Ambassador, the Waiter, and the Security Guard.  Then he’s watching people, but keeping the laser sight away from the action.  I think the Spy screws up and goes for the statue swap where he’s visible, and that’s what gets him shot so fast.  He should have swapped one of the statues behind the big mob of people.  :)

Finally! I’ve been looking forward to this blog post, I’m the sniper in that video and yes checker you’re right I knew the spy hadn’t switched out the statue yet so I was keeping an eye out for any people I already suspected going towards the statue, when I saw the guy in the top hat going towards the statue I made sure to point my rifle away from him while still keeping him on screen to lull him into a false sense of safety, then when I saw him switching the statues I went right for the kill… Oh god I forgot how much fun this game was.

Actually, I don’t have a Xbox 360 or a controller for it, is it still possible for me to play?

    As much as I’d love to do a test, I don’t know if I can do it. ;.;

    • checker says:

Yes, it plays with mouse and keyboard as well.  I wish I could make it work with the PS3 controller, too, but Sony is really short sighted on that kind of thing and don’t provide windows drivers.

    • joshrl says:

It would be better if Sony provided Windows Drivers for PS3 controllers, but if it works with keyboard and mouse I’ll just use those. :)

      Hooray! I can test! :D

I’ve found that the indie-made SixaxisDriver works great with a PS3 controller for pretty much any PC game that supports a gamepad.

    • checker says:

Huh, do you have a link to it?  The only one I’ve seen that’s not under NDA in Sony’s devkit is a driver from some company in China that requires you to do all kinds of crazy stuff to disable driver signing.  If there’s another one that works better, that’d be awesome!

    • joshrl says:

You have to disable driver signing if you are on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, I believe.

      I did get a method to work once, but that was a fluke since it doesn’t work any other times. ;.;

I bet that driver’ll need disable driver signing as well, but will it have a better success rate?

      I’d like a link too! ^.^

Any chance of a public alpha? I am dying to try this but I don’t live near any major cities, I live in a tiny village in Devon.

    • checker says:

I’m 212 miles from you right this instant in Nottingham at GameCity, after flying 5300 miles to get here!  And your country has awesome and cheap trains!  You have no excuse!

But yes, there will be a wider scale test sometime next year.  :)
